Exercise and Fitness (EF)
EF205: Principles of Exercise Science
This course introduces you to the scientific basis of exercise and fitness physiology and related human anatomy, including cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems. You will learn about lifestyle choices, the benefits of being active, health appraisals and assessment testing, and fitness principles to design a personalized exercise plan. You will also explore current strategies in exercise and fitness training.
Quarter Credit Hours: 5 | Prerequisite: None
EF300: Principles of Kinesiology
In this course, you will analyze human movement using anatomical and physiological terminology. You will categorize muscle groups and skeletal structures by their functional roles and analyze movement patterns for joint actions and planes of motion. By applying mechanical principles, you will construct biomechanical profiles for specific exercises. Additionally, you will differentiate between exercise modalities based on biomechanical load and stability requirements.
EF305: Exercise Physiology
In this course, you will examine the physiological systems that drive human energy production. You will analyze cardiovascular, respiratory, and neuromuscular responses to physical exertion and apply intensity guidelines based on heart rate zones and metabolic demands. You will evaluate exercise modalities based on physiological stress and use performance data to assess fitness levels. Finally, you will design training recommendations that promote physiological adaptation.
Quarter Credit Hours: 6 | Prerequisite: EF300
EF310: Applied Exercise Science for Healthy Aging and Special Conditions
Exploring exercise and fitness across the lifespan and for special conditions, this course addresses the unique needs and considerations of different age groups, as well as individuals managing specific health conditions. Emphasis is placed on current trends, risk factors, and pathologies relevant to these populations. You will develop proficiency in designing individualized exercise prescriptions and critically evaluate research in community and corporate fitness settings.
Quarter Credit Hours: 6 | Prerequisite: None
EF400: Psychosocial Aspects of Exercise
In this course, you will compare psychological models of exercise behavior change and integrate self-efficacy strategies into adherence plans. You will analyze the relationship between body image, self-esteem, and exercise behaviors to synthesize strategies and support systems into integrated interventions. You will also critique community-based programs and evaluate coaching communication styles for professional practice.
Quarter Credit Hours: 6 | Prerequisite: EF205
